Who are we?
Mighty Fortress is a family of believers finding refuge in the sure promises of God's Word and strength in our Saviour Jesus Christ, all for sharing our hope with the people of our community, our country, and our world.
Our Beliefs
Scripture Alone
In an age of confusion, we believe that the Bible (Scripture) is God's Word, without error. We believe that the Bible is the truth even when it teaches some difficult or confusing truths. One of those difficult truths is that God requires perfection from us (Leviticus 19:2). This is a difficult truth because we aren’t perfect. The Bible tells us that all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God (Romans 3:23). But that’s not all the Bible teaches. The Bible also teaches us the good news truth about Jesus. In fact, the whole Bible centres on Jesus who is the ultimate fulfillment of God’s grace.
Grace Alone
The good news is a message of grace. Grace is God’s undeserved love for us. His grace showed itself in his Son, Jesus Christ. Jesus was and is both God and man all at the same time. Jesus lived a perfect life in our place (Hebrews 4:15). Jesus died for all of our sins (2 Corinthians 5:21). Jesus rose from the dead on Easter Sunday to confirm it (Matthew 28:6). Jesus lived in our place. Jesus died for our sins. Jesus rose to prove it. The result is the good news truth of eternal life full and free!
Faith Alone
How do we receive all the benefits of Jesus’ work? How do we receive eternal life? It is through faith (trusting in Jesus) that we are saved from eternal death and given eternal life as a free gift (Ephesians 2:8). The way that we grow stronger in our faith is by hearing that good news message more and more (Romans 10:17).
Our Core Values
Unchanged Truth
The unchanged truth of God’s Word is our guide. We will not change it. Rather, we will be humbly led by it.
Grace Centered
God’s unchanging truth (the Bible) is all centered on Jesus. God showed his undeserved love to us by sending Jesus to die for us.
Committed Outreach
The good news of full and free forgiveness and eternal life in Jesus is too good to keep to ourselves. We are committed to sharing the good news with all people.
Spiritual Growth
Growing in the faith is a lifelong journey. We’re always learning more about Jesus as we hear God’s Word. With every worship service, Bible study, and small group gathering, we are growing in our faith in Jesus.
Selfless Service
God has given us the command to love one another. One of the ways that we love one another is by serving each other and our community in selflessness.
Lasting Relationships
God designed us to do life together with our friends and family. At Mighty Fortress, we value our Christian friendships.

Hi there! Thanks for visiting our website. My name is Dan Spaude and I have the privilege of serving as the pastor at Mighty Fortress Lutheran here in Red Deer. I was born and grew up in Antigo, Wisconsin in the United States. In 2019, I graduated from Martin Luther College in New Ulm, Minnesota with a Bachelor of Arts in Biblical Languages. From there, I went to Wisconsin Lutheran Seminary in Mequon, Wisconsin where I graduated with a Master's of Divinity in May of 2023. In that same month, I received the call to serve here at Mighty Fortress.
I am married to my wonderful wife, Megan. Together, we've enjoyed exploring the area, making new connections and taking in the beautiful sights here in Alberta!
I love spending time with people. Every person has a story and I'd love to hear what yours is. I'd also love to share Jesus' story with you and how you fit into it.

Our Church's Affiliation
Mighty Fortress is a member of an international church body called the Wisconsin Evangelical Lutheran Synod (WELS), consisting of 450,000 members and 1,700 churches worldwide. Founded in Wisconsin in 1850, the WELS subscribes to the historic Lutheran faith as laid out in the Book of Concord, written in 1580 and composed primarily of the writings of Reformers like Martin Luther.
